Even if she doesn’t snag an award tonight, Carey Mulligan’s gold gown at the 2021 Oscars is definitely a win. The actor stunned on the red carpet in a sequined Valentino strapless dress with a crop top-style cutout.

Mulligan, nominated for Best Actress for her starring role in Promising Young Woman, wore a two-part piece by Valentino Haute Couture — featuring a bandeau top, billowy skirt, and train — along with Sophia Webster platform heels. The star paired her sparkly getup with a simple updo that showcased a middle part and minimal jewelry. Mulligan walked the carpet alongside her husband, Marcus Mumford, whose plain black tux let her gold ensemble steal the spotlight.

The dress code for this year’s Oscars called for “Inspirational and Aspirational” attire, so Mulligan’s dazzling gold two-piece dress clearly shows the actor is ready to take home a matching trophy. She couldn’t have dressed more fittingly for the part of an Oscar winner if she tried.

The Promising Young Woman star wasn’t the only actor who showed up to the red carpet wearing gold — Leslie Odom Jr. rocked a head-to-toe gold suit by Brioni, Andra Day (nominated for Best Actress alongside Mulligan) wore a gold sequined Vera Wang gown with cutouts, and H.E.R. performed during the Oscars pre-show wearing an extra-glittery gold three-piece suit and platform heels, complete with ’70s-style bellbottoms. Even Questlove showed up to the red carpet with gold Crocs peeking out from beneath his otherwise all-black outfit. Gold is turning out to be the theme color for the night... and it’s not just because of the trophy itself.
