Is it just me or have the fashion stakes been really elevated with this year’s instalment of Love Island? And I’m not just talking about the new, sustainable collab with eBay, either. Like many, I’ve been eyeing up Gemma Owen’s particularly beautiful statement choker. But if you take a quick glance at her Instagram, it’s not something she’s borrowed from the girl’s shared jewellery collection. Instead, it looks to be a sentimental piece she’s brought along for the ride. So what’s the story behind Gemma’s ‘X’ necklace and where did it come from?

According to Metro, Owen’s necklace is a vintage Tiffany & Co piece that was designed by jewellery artisan Jean Schlumberger in the ‘80s. You may not be able to see it on telly, but the necklace features 92 “round brilliant cut diamonds” alternating between 18k yellow gold X’s, per luxury online second hand marketplace 1stdibs. It’s unclear exactly how much the necklace originally retailed for, but the one that’s already been nabbed on 1stdibs sold for £41,531.65.

A brand new Tiffany & Co x Sclumberger X necklace is “near impossible” to source, according to Grazia, but the matching sixteen stone ring and bracelet are still available to buy. Both pieces are smaller versions of the necklace, but are equally eye-watering in price. The bracelet is selling for £19,687.63 on eBay, while Tiffany & Co are still selling the ring for £9,825.

Owen has yet to mention the origins of the necklace on Love Island, but she’s been wearing the piece since around December 2021, judging by her Instagram. There’s a chance it could have been given to her by her dad Michael Owenwho has an estimated net worth of over £50 million – or from her own earnings as an international dressage rider and clothing brand owner. Either way, she’s a very lucky gal with a stunning necklace in her possession.
