Body Masks Are About To Be Your New Fave Skincare

by Miki Hayes

So I have a new obsession. For whatever reason, I can be a little lazy when it comes to face masks. But body masks are an entirely different matter. I can't get enough. And I know what you might be thinking: Are body masks really necessary? They sound like kind of a gimmick. Well I won't argue with you there, because that's totally what I thought at first too. If your body really needs some extra TLC, why not just use a little bit of whatever face mask you already have lying around? Nothing wrong with that. Especially because some masks are formulated for use on both the face and body.

But your body has much more surface area than your face, and face masks can be hella expensive. Not to mention, the skin on the body is different from that on the face, which is why there's a segregation of face and body products to begin with. So if those face masks that you might be using on your body just aren't cutting it (or are being used up way too quickly), try something a little more potent — something actually made to suit the skin on your body. Plus, if you're prone to bacne or other body breakouts, a heavier-duty mud mask could be just the ticket. Regardless of if you want clearer pores, more hydrated skin, or more radiant skin; you gotta start using a body mask. Just be prepared to become addicted. Don't say I didn't warn you.

1. Detoxifying

The Body Shop Himalayan Charcoal Body Clay, $16, Amazon

If you have congested skin, a charcoal mask like this one is perfect. Seriously, impurities and toxins are no match for the combination of charcoal and kaolin. Plus, it has a refreshing cooling effect; perfect for use after a workout.

2. Exfoliating

Lush Mask of Magnaminty, $27, Amazon

The variety of ingredients in this mask act kind of like a catch-all for skin. China clay deep-cleans, aduki beans exfoliate, vanilla calms redness, and honey soothes. Oh, and this mask can be used on the face or body.

3. Hydrating

Hempz Exotic Green Tea & Asian Pear Exfoliating Herbal Body Mask, $20, Amazon

OK first of all, doesn't green tea and pear just sound delicious? But don't eat this mask, because the antioxidants and fatty acids will help protect skin while anti-inflammatory properties and skin-regenerating ingredients will help stimulate and promote healthy skin.

4. Tanning

James Read Sleep Mask Tan Body, $52, Saks Fifth Avenue

Self-tanning is pretty annoying. But when you can do it overnight, plus reap the soothing and moisturizing benefits of hyaluronic acid and red algae, why wouldn't you??

5. Brightening

Borghese Fango Brillante Brightening Mud Mask for Face And Body, $61, Amazon

Citrus extract and avocado oil make this mud mask ideal for evening and brightening the skin. Everywhere. Because this one can be used on the face and body.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go spread some mud all over my body.
