6 New Years Resolutions for Extroverts

by Claire Luchette

Happy 2014, extroverts! This is the year you make the most of your outgoingness, honesty, and enthusiasm. And even though, as the Wall Street Journal reported, studies show extroverts are happier and more motivated than introverts, there are still things you can do to better yourself in the coming months, whether you need to set more boundaries or listen better. O Gregarious Ones, conquer 2014!

1. Be an active listener.

Allow other people to take control of conversations. Be careful not to interrupt, but ask probing questions to show you're attentive.

2. Don't be afraid to let others know when you're busy.

Make sure people respond to boundaries at work and out on the town. When you're in the middle of an involved task or don't want to talk, let other people know (by shutting the door, or putting on headphones) so you're not interrupted.

3. Compliment other people; let them shine.

4. Admit when you need help.

When you get stuck, don't be afraid to ask for guidance and advice from other people, whether you're working on a problem in the office, or trying to navigate relationships. And remember what Nora Ephron said: "Insane people are always sure that they are fine. It is only the sane people who are willing to admit that they are crazy." In other words, therapy is a great thing.

5. And admit when you're wrong.

No one's perfect! Pair your confidence with some humility. Admit when you mess up.

6. Choose to make yourself vulnerable more often.

As Brené Brown discusses in this witty and wise TED Talk, vulnerability can be the key to brilliance and beauty. So whatever makes you uncomfortable and vulnerable: do that.
