Is 'Pretty Little Liars' Aria The New Emily?

by Maggie Malach

When you are a devoted Pretty Little Liars fan, you take hints from the cast and crew and examine them for all they're worth. (And then some.) While Pretty Little Liars is on hiatus until the second half of Season Six, viewers are searching for clues at what we can expect. It's very possible that PLL director Norman Buckley just revealed the fate of Ezria.

Buckley posted a fan's tweet, along with the comment "From me to the Ezrians, with my sympathy. ;-)." (Things already don't look good.) The original tweet was captioned "Aria's Diary #FutureAria #FemmeFatale #AriaIsTheNewEmily" and included a photo of what appears to be text from Superman Is An Arab: On God, Marriage, Macho Men And Other Disastrous Inventions by Joumanna Haddad. In other words, Buckley is implying that Aria and Ezra split, as evidenced by the text, which discusses falling out of love with someone. Also worthy of note: Comparing Aria to Emily.

The #FutureAria hashtag clearly denotes that this is referencing the character in the second half of Season 6. At this point, we don't officially know if Aria and Ezra are still together. However, seeing as Spencer and Toby and Hanna and Caleb are rumored to be split in the time jump, it's totally possibly that another fan-favorite couple broke up too. So how does Emily fit into this? She split from her longtime girlfriend Paige in the second half of Season 5. The two were another popular couple on the show, so it's possible that the hashtag is a nod to the end of another great pairing.

All of this points to one thing: The end of Ezria. (Sniffles.) The question of what's Ezra doing after the time jump has been examined before and the conclusion is still that he's probably no longer with Aria. If there's one nugget of hope I'm clinging to, it's this. "Ezra, Aria – they're soulmates," executive producer I. Marlene King said in the bonus footage for Pretty Little Liars: The Complete Fifth Season. "Even when they're not together, they're soulmates. And sometimes it's hard for the audience to understand because they want them to be together all the time."

Pretty Little Liars Season 6B is scheduled to premiere in January 2016.
