Facebook Went Down This Morning

by Jenny Hollander

On Thursday, social networking giant Facebook abruptly went down for some users, providing a "Service Unavailable" message instead. By 12.43 p.m., however, the site was back, with BuzzFeed immediately tweeting: "Facebook is back. Enjoy more baby pics and 'I said YES' posts." The social network was only down for a few minutes, but that was long enough for Twitter to step up and provide an immeasurable number of hilarious Tweets mocking the outage.

Facebook hasn't yet commented on the official cause of the shutdown, but my personal bet is that the news that Leighton Meester and Adam Brody had their baby was the culprit. (I'm kidding. But it's a Gossip Girl / The O.C. fusion baby! Is there anything more perfect?!)

Many people referenced the infamous Social Network scene in which Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, played by Jesse Eisenberg, panicked about the network's servers being down. "We don't crash. Ever!" (You'll probably remember that scene from, well, the last time Facebook crashed.)

Ironically, Zuckerberg announced last week that Facebook is working on a "dislike" button, which I'm sure a lot of people have a lot of use for right now.
