18 Underrated '90s Pop Songs You Need To Revisit

by Alex Kritselis

I listened to the radio a lot when I was growing up in the '90s, and with each passing year, my nostalgia for the music becomes stronger. We've all read lists of the supposedly "best" '90s pop songs before, but what about a list of the songs you absolutely love... but sometimes forget exist? What about a list of the songs that make your day when they pop up unexpectedly on your iPod? What about a list of the most underrated '90s pop songs? Now that's a stroll down memory lane I'm dying to take.

I spent a lot of time thinking about the list below. Some of the tunes you've probably forgotten about completely, and others, you may have never even heard of before (but trust me, that doesn't mean they're not worth your attention!). For whatever reason, these tracks don't get praised nearly as often as big hits from ‘90s artists like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, and *NSYNC, but they're still a lot of fun to listen to. In fact, they’re so much fun to listen to, you might need to throw a ‘90s-themed party ASAP just to have an excuse to blast them on your stereo.

Here are 18 of the most underrated pop songs of the '90s:

Mandy Moore — "Candy"

Obviously the best song of Mandy Moore's career. Obviously.

Toy-Box — "Best Friend"

HEAR ME OUT: I know "Best Friend" seems like TOO MUCH TO HANDLE at first, but give it a chance. The sugary sweet chorus is going to get stuck in your head harder than anything has ever been stuck in your head before... and you'll love it. I promise.

Blackstreet, Blinky Blink, Mase & Mýa — "Take Me There"

I know "Take Me There" is on The Rugrats Movie soundtrack (and I know Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, AND Lil all get named-dropped in the lyrics), but I don't care! I can't get enough of it.

Crush — "Jellyhead"

I had legitimately forgotten about this song until today. I'm going to start calling people "jellyheads" immediately.

Keith Sweat — "Nobody" (Feat. Athena Cage)

Oooh, this one takes me back.

Björk — "Big Time Sensuality"

"Big Time Sensuality" always puts me in a good mood (though, admittedly, I still have no idea what its lyrics mean).

Monifah — "Touch It"

Such a jam.

Real McCoy — "Another Night"

Out of my way, please! I need to DANCE!

CeCe Peniston — "Finally"

Queen.

Melanie C — "Never Be The Same Again" (Feat. Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes)

Forgot about former Spice Girl Mel C's solo career? Not me! This one was on HEAVY Winamp rotation for me back in the day.

Blaque — "808" (Remix)

The "808" remix is everything. To be honest, I don't even know what the original version sounds like.

Groove Theory — "Tell Me"

A timeless bop.

INOJ — "Love You Down"

INOJ's voice gives me so many feelings! I can't explain it.

702 — "Where My Girls At?"

The "Where My Girls At?" chorus is iconic.

Basement Jaxx — "Red Alert"

Chances are "Red Alert" wasn't on your radar when it was released back in 1999, BUT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. It's so funky and cool.

The Cardigans — "Lovefool"

Look, I realize there are a lot of "Lovefool" lovers out there, but I still don't think the song gets the praise it deserves. It's fantastic.

Björk — "Hyperballad"

Devastating.

Robyn — "Show Me Love"

Simply put, Robyn is incredible.
