According to this, 2013 Was Very Depressing

by Rachel Semigran

Fox's Animation Domination Hi-Def (ADHD...get it!?) just released a cartoon compilation of the year that was 2013...and well, I guess it's supposed to be funny, but it's actually really depressing. The one-minute neon seizure-inducing 8-bit-y cartoon features some of the biggest headlines and pop culture moments that made 2013. And though there were plenty of great things that happened in the media in 2013, there were plenty more that were less than savory.

The takeaway from the short is that 2013 was a year in which we consumed some pretty low celebrity culture and had a government that failed us. There was a lot of Kanye, too much Miley, Bieber being awful and peeing on things, Paula Deen being racist, politicians taking a lot of drugs, twerking, Blurred Lines, the government shutting down, Obama being criticized at every turn....and the death of James Gandolfini and Paul Walker. Cripes, Fox.

There were however, thankfully, a few blinks in the one-minute clip that could induce a smile: Beyonce in a Pizza ensemble, Thanksgivukkah, The Royal Babe, Internet cat culture, Stephen Colbert, the return of Daft Punk, Billy Nye the Science Guy, and the "Bound 2" parody by James Franco and Seth Rogen.

There was a lot more to 2013 than just that, but all in all ADHD did capture the Zeitgietiest moments of the past 12 months. The results aren't exactly the most uplifting — but isn't that the point of New Year's resolutions? To look at the year gone by and resolve to make the next year better in big and small ways. So maybe in 2014 we do less twerking and do a bit more reading. We praise artists who celebrate sex in ways that aren't demeaning or cruel. We make our government really listen up when we're not okay with how things are going. And, well, just take care of each other a little more.

OH, and buy more pizza dresses and watch more cats on YouTube.
