We're Actually Defending Madonna On This

Madonna recently posted a photo to Instagram that sent the world, or at least the world that cares about Madonna's Instagram, into a frenzy. The photo shows her 13-year-old son, Rocco Ritchie, holding a bottle of gin and it's not Tanqueray! Of course everyone is all, "Madonna, why are you putting on that English accent all the time if you're not going to even feed your tween a proper gin?!" Oh. That's not why they're mad? What's the problem?

Okay, seriously now, the reason people are upset is because a 13-year-old is eight years too young to be drinking legally and a mom, of all people, should not be okay with underage drinking. Even in Switzerland, where the picture was taken, the drinking age is 16 and that's... totally not relevant because Madonna probably isn't letting her 13-year-old drink. Just because Madonna took a picture of her son holding a bottle of liquor, doesn't mean he's drinking it. The photo was clearly meant to be silly. There's three teens each holding a bottle of alcohol and posing with faux-serious looks on their faces. The photo is captioned, "The party has just begun! Bring it! 2014." It's not that funny, but it also doesn't mean Rocco is getting drunko with his mom's approval.

Instagram commenters disagreed saying things like, "Booz is not something to make jokes about. Period!" Okay, fine. Some people don't like "booz" jokes, but even weirder were the people who supported Madonna's decision to let her son drink. "You guys are hipocryt....dont tell me you wernt drinking on that age... just brcause its the son of a celeb u have to bitch about it.. let thuis dude have his new year party...sorry for the bad english.... greetz from holland. [sic]"

What? Let this dude have his New Year's party? Madonna took the picture! That would totally not be okay! But at least you're not mad at her for being a bad parent...?

After the photo stirred up such a controversy, Madonna posted another picture on Instagram with the caption, "No one was drinking we were just having fun! Calm down and get a sense of humor! Don't start the year off with judgement!"

Well said, Madonna. It's a strange day when I end up defending Madonna especially because a quick look at her Instagram reveals a penis shaped bong. I'm not trying to start my year off with judgement, but if I was Rocco, that picture my mother posted of genitalia would be a way bigger concern of mine.
