'Royals' for the 20-somethings

by Kristie Rohwedder

While I ran errands yesterday, the SiriusXM U station DJ announced she'd be playing "old school" songs… from the year 2004. 2004. This isn't OLD SCHOOL, I thought. I listened to these songs in high school! That wasn't THAT long ago... UGH, fine. That was a while ago. Quit reminding me that I'm growing up, RADIO STATION. So yes, I totally appreciate Molly Dworsky's parody of Lorde's "Royals." Her version of the song addresses the realities of adulthood, the "meh" parts of growing up, and feeling nostalgic about high school. Ah, all of the themes I grappled with during that block of old school songs yesterday.

The lyrical content of "(Hopkins)Royals" may hit a little close to home for anyone in their late 20s/early 30s, but that doesn't make it any less hilarious. Yes, it's a parody, but the song never mocks our beloved Lorde. Nice work, Dworsky—er—Borde! Keepin' it respectful. The lyrics are clever, the video is well done, and Dworsky even looks like Lorde! "(Hopkins) Royals" is a slam dunk.

Seriously though? How am I not going to laugh out loud when she sings, "And everybody's got kids, a mortgage, real responsibility/Neck pains, diets, hot chicks were born after me/So unfair, I have to pay for my own health care." I'm fairly certain I say something along those lines on a weekly basis. So real, yet so good.
