What Your Favorite YA Novel Says About You

by Julia Seales

There are tons of YA series out there, going from book to bestseller to blockbuster movie, and it’s time to admit it: You’ve read them all. As you should! Sometimes a person needs to cuddle up with a great young adult quest novel, or a teenage romance, or the story of a rebellious “chosen one” who leads a revolution. People who say that YA books are only for children are seriously missing out, because there’s no reason why you can’t relate to a character just because his or her age isn’t exactly the same as yours.

If you remember what it was like to be a teenager, chances are you’ll be able to sympathize with the hero or heroine in some fashion. And OK, maybe these books have tropes in them (love triangles, being sorted into houses/factions/etc.), but so do all genres and categories of books. Plus, they’re entertaining! They’re fun! And they contain themes that everyone can relate to.

However, despite the common motifs in many YA books, overall they’re pretty different. That’s probably why YA fans are so hardcore — they’re constantly defending their chosen favorite. So in true YA fashion, I’m going to sort you by your favorite young adult book, and explain exactly what your fandom reveals about you.

Though they'll also have to hear you complain about social media these days, because you've got a bit of a vendetta about the way the Capitol — I mean, "the man" — presents everything.
