No One On Twitter Wants A 'Memento' Remake

Remakes are all the rage in Hollywood, which is fitting considering that news of some remakes makes fans of the original rage in an entirely different way. While some remakes and reboots may be cheered on by fans (Mad Max: Fury Road, anyone?) not every re-do gets cheers. The latest movie to get the remake treatment is certainly not making fans of the original excited: according to The Hollywood Reporter, Christopher Nolan's 2000 thriller Memento is getting a remake, and it is making fans wildly unhappy.

For those of you who haven't seen the movie that made the entertainment industry stand up and take notice of writer/director Nolan, do not wait for the remake. The film has been lauded for its interesting structural narrative, as the story is told backwards — each "new day" in the film is actually the day before. It works because the main character suffers from short-term memory loss, and writes himself notes to get him through the day. It's not very surprising that Hollywood wants to remake something so original, but, umm, doesn't re-making something original kind of defeats the purpose of its originality? Twitter certainly thinks so, and the response from angry fans suggests that they would rather forget the remake is even happening in the first place:

Sorry, Memento remake producers, but... what jokes did you expect when you decide to remake a 15-year-old movie about memory?

The remake hasn't been made yet, but already it seems that the original is set to surpass it. Maybe producers should rewind and forget this idea ever happened.
