'Frozen' Gets a Huge Honor

by Rachel Simon

It may not have been much of a surprise (seriously, did anyone think The Croods had a chance?), but that doesn't mean we weren't jumping with joy when Frozen won the 2014 Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film. The Disney-produced movie, currently winning raves and selling out the box office, beat out both The Croods and Despicable Me 2 for the honor, causing fans everywhere to collectively burst into "Let It Go." At least, that's what we did...

As all who saw Frozen know, the film was hugely deserving of the Globe, and any other honor that comes its way this awards season. It's smart, funny, and, most importantly, feminist — both in regards to the plot, which revolves around the relationship between two sisters, and the production, which was led by directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck. Frozen's win is an incredible step for feminism, especially female filmmakers, like Lee, hoping to get recognized within Hollywood. The Golden Globe win marks only the second time in the award show's history that the honor for Best Animated Feature Film went to a movie made by a woman (Brave's Brenda Chapman was the first). There's still much progress to be made, but Lee's recognition for Frozen is a win for women everywhere.

So, three cheers for Frozen, not only the best animated movie of the year, but the most important.
