These Movie Costumes Sold For A Lot At Auction

by Kali Borovic

Hold on to your dress, because this news is creating a whirlwind of its own. Worn by Judy Garland and known by all, Dorothy's blue checked dress sold for $1.56 million at a New York auction, according to InStyle. Yup, I'm talking the one from the Wizard of Oz. I knew the dress was iconic, but who knew it was that iconic?

The 1930s dress definitely isn't in Kansas anymore — it's in New York, where things are lavish and a tad bit more expensive. According to CNN, "three competitive bidders fought for the iconic piece of movie history via phone" before the anonymous buyer won, purchasing the blue and white frock for way more than the $800,000 to $1.2 million it was estimated to fetch.

"As we witnessed today in the Bonhams saleroom, the dress is considered a true and timeless icon of classic Hollywood," Catherine Williamson, Bonhams' director of entertainment memorabilia told CNN.

According to International Business Times, the dress was just one item in a 400 piece collection of iconic movie items auctioned off, which included everything from some of Marilyn Monroe's dresses to Willy Wonka's golden ticket. Garland's dress from the movie was also estimated to sell for the most money. Talk about the ultimate Halloween costume for whoever was lucky enough to snag this piece of movie history!

The Wizard of Oz isn't the only movie that draws in the big buyers, either. If you think Dorothy's dress was expensive, you'll never believe what people spent on other iconic movie costumes.

1. Cowardly Lion Suit

Last year, Dorothy's buddy sold for $3 million at a New York auction, according to Daily Mail. That's a whole lot of money for a lion outfit.

2. Gone With The Wind Dress

It might not have ranked quite as much as Dorothy's outfit, but the Gone With The Wind dress was auctioned off for $137,000 earlier this year, according to CNN. Considering Vanity Fair reported that the original owner bought the dress for $20 when it was on the verge of being thrown away, I'd say that's a pretty good profit.

3. Michael Jackson's Thriller Jacket

Just two years after his death, someone purchased Michael Jackson's Thriller jacket for $1.8 million, according to CNN.

4. Dorothy's Ruby Red Slippers

One of six pairs of ruby red slippers sold for $2 million this year, which is considerably more than the $0 that someone spent when they stole them from the Judy Garland Museum this summer.

5. Marilyn Monroe's Seven Year Itch Dress

You probably know this dress as the one that Monroe held down as a gust of wind from a subway grate blew up the hem, but you probably don't know the iconic piece sold for $4.6 million in a 2011 auction, according to the BBC.

6. Bruce Lee's Coat

The karate master's over-the-top fur coat from Game of Death sold for $77,000 in Hong Kong, BBC reported.

7. Audrey Hepburn's Little Black Dress

Odds are you've probably spent a good chuck of money on the perfect black dress, but the little black dress went for over $900,000 at a charity auction in 2006, according to PEOPLE.

That's a whole lot of cash for a movie memory!
