A 'Making A Murderer' Season 2 Might Happen

by Chloe Kent

After a wildly popular first season, Netflix's Making a Murderer might be coming back for more. According to Variety, while at the Television Critics Association press tour on Sunday, Netflix's Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos told reporters asking about a Making a Murderer Season 2 that "The story is still unfolding, so we’ll certainly take a look at it." While he cautioned that nothing was official, Sarandos was quick to add that he owed the series' success to a "crazy combination of a super-addictive" story and viewers “having the time to watch it" over the holidays. Perhaps the formula might be worth replicating, especially since there's ample news to discuss following a handful of significant pieces of evidence in Steven Avery's case that have come to light in the weeks following the 10-part series' release.

The documentary, which filmmakers Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi shot over the course of 10 years, covers 700 hours of footage, so there's certainly more ground to cover if a second season following the same case does happen. And any new episodes are likely to garner the same controversy that Season 1 has. Discussing the heated opinions surrounding Avery’s exoneration after 18 years in prison for a sexual assault charge and current life sentence for the rape and murder of Teresa Halbach in 2005, Sarandos said at the TCAs, "To split hairs about what was left in and what was left out — it’s a great film and we want people to watch it and decide for themselves."

And oh, have the people responded. A December WhiteHouse.gov petition asking President Obama to pardon Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey surpassed the required 100,000 supporters needed to elicit a response by nearly 30,000 people. While the official White House response said that the men couldn't be pardoned since they're state prisoners, the fact that the petition got a response at all shows just how powerful the show's impact has been.

Given Making a Murderer's huge following, it seems like Netflix would be wise to greenlight another season of its breakout hit, but only time will time whether Avery's story will be gracing our screens for a second round.
