9 Harry Potter Quotes On Being Different

by Alex Weiss

Many of the beloved Harry Potter characters were anything but normal. Luna Lovegood taught us that weirdness was a strength, not a weakness. Hermione Granger was often looked down on for being a mudblood and different from the other wizards, but her wit and brains proved otherwise. Harry Potter stood out like a literal lightning bolt with differences from everyone else. If anything, J.K. Rowling captured this group of misfit wizards and witches, allowing us to relate to them, because deep down, we're all vastly different from each other.

Embracing your quirks and unique qualities is all a part of accepting yourself for who you are. Maybe you have a tendency to ramble or don't feel like you talk enough. Maybe you're different in your bright blue hair and fun tattoos. Whichever way you stand out from the crowd, be proud of it. Being different is awesome.

Forget about fitting in, because as we all learned after reading the Harry Potter series, none of us are truly "normal" muggles, if muggles at all. In case you need a reminder of why being different is so important, I've gathered up a list of quotes from the Harry Potter books and J.K. Rowling herself. Be weird, have fun, and enjoy every little part that makes you different with these nine quotes:

1. "Being different isn't a bad thing. It means you're brave enough to be yourself."

— Luna Lovegood, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

2. "She [Lily Potter] had a way of seeing the beauty in others even, and perhaps most especially, when that person couldn’t see it in themselves."

— Remus Lupin, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

3. "It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be."

— Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

4. "While we may come from different places, and speak in different tongues, our hearts beat as one."

— Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

5. "Understanding is the first step to acceptance, and only with acceptance can there be recovery."

— Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

6. "We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are."

— Sirius Black, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

7. "I don't think she's weird, she is completely herself. She is OK with being eccentric and a little different."

— Evanna Lynch, on her Luna Lovegood character

8. "I’m hunted quite as much as any goblin or elf, Griphook! I’m a Mudblood!""Don't call yourself —""Why shouldn’t I? Mudblood, and proud of it!"

— Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

9. "The wizards represent all that the true 'muggle' most fears: They are plainly outcasts and comfortable with being so. Nothing is more unnerving to the truly conventional than the unashamed misfit!"

— J.K. Rowling, Salon Interview
