11 Fashion Lessons Jaden Smith Can Teach You

by Julia Musto

Louis Vuitton's newest face, famed gender fluid model, actor, and rapper Jaden Smith, has a thing or eleven to teach you about fashion. Smith is know for being unapologetically original when it comes to personal style and perspective shown in interviews. He also shows a lot of wisdom already for someone who is only 18 years-old. It makes sense that this kid should be your style icon.

Smith recently posed for Vogue Korea and made waves in a black skirt and patterned dress. It seems that he is breaking out of adolescent trend-following in favor of whatever the heck he wants to wear. It also seems that Smith is growing up; he is set to star in Baz Luhrman's cool-looking new Netflix original series The Get Down, which will be released this coming August — a revolutionary role for Smith that will set him apart from the sphere of child blockbuster stardom.

Maybe the new role Smith takes will impact his own image, but I certainly hope not. Authenticity and independence is a rarity even amongst artists nowadays. Smith is an example for why you should be unapologetic when it comes to fashion. I hope that these style lessons from Smith's fashion history can help you to be happier and more confident about what you wear.

1. Flowy Is Good

It's both comfy and cool looking.

2. All Black Is Good

This is kind of just a given, but Smith either goes full neutral like Kylie Jenner or mixes crazy patterns.

3. Patterns You Don't Think Can Mix, Do

Just try it! You never know what combinations will surprise you. Smith mismatches his shoes all the time and it rules.

4. If You Believe You're Pulling It Off, You Are

This is the face of someone who believes he's pulling it off. You need to wear this face.

5. Wear Whatever You Want To Wear

Screw tradition! Throw caution to the wind! Wear what you think is cool and what looks good to you. You can spend so much time worrying about what someone else thinks that you forget that the person who should be happy is yourself.

6. Borrow From All Of Your Family Members

Siblings who share together... stay together? And get into huge fights, but, that is to be expected.

7. Hair Is An Important Wardrobe Staple

We can't all be blessed with great hair, but there are ways to personalize it. I've gone auburn, red, blonde, brunette, and ombre. Now galaxy hair is a thing. Personal expression can translate to your hair.

8. Wear A Lot Of Nikes

Nikes are still the ultimate cool athleisure look accessory. They can dress looks up and down depending on the style. Metallics are always a good way to go, but I find my white Nikes are fresh to death with almost anything.

9. Layering Makes Any Look

Layering is easy, effortless, and functional. Plus, stripping off clothes is always sexy.

10. Personal Style Is Not Just Fashion, It's a Reflection of Self

Your personal style is a reflection of who you are to the outside world. Even the littlest choices make a large impact. Remember that in dressing for you, you are giving the world a little peak of who you are. They say, "Dress to impress!" However, I say, "Dress to feel good."

11. Be Adventurous!

Try new things to see if you like them! Be a pioneer like Jaden Smith, whether in fashion or any other field. See what makes you happy and what you feel amazing in!
