Finally, A Maternity Look That Works

by Mary Avant

Of all the joys that come with being pregnant, we’re pretty sure that finding stylish yet comfortable maternity clothing to accommodate a growing baby bump doesn’t take up a top spot on the list. And personal stylists aside, we imagine today’s pregnant stars only have it worse than the average woman, with dozens of cameras documenting their every move, especially as awards season kicks into high gear. Keeping this in mind, we’re ready to forgive mommy-to-be Drew Barrymore for her many fashion misses of late, particularly because the actress and newly minted author finally got her maternity style right with the insanely cute dress she wore to Tuesday night’s Hollywood Stands Up To Cancer event.

Looking positively chic in a long-sleeve, patterned Giuletta dress that hit right below the knee, Barrymore proved at last that she does indeed know how to dress her adorable baby bump. The soon-to-be mother of two finished off the look flawlessly with a simple yellow clutch, basic black pumps, a casual updo, and a beautiful dark red lip. Though it featured a floral print, too, the flattering black dress was immeasurably better than Barrymore's 2014 Golden Globe Awards outfit, which was a flowery mess.

Choosing to show off a little bit of leg was a wise move for Barrymore, as many of her poor outfit choices over the last couple of months have happened when she tries to cover up too much of her beautiful body. The white-and-yellow combo she wore to this year’s People’s Choice Awards — complete with a frilly waistband that did her absolutely no favors — was only slightly better than the watercolor caftan that swallowed her whole at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's 2013 Art + Film Gala last November. (We will admit, however, that she looked pretty great in this patterned number at the Baby2Baby Gala the same month.)

There’s a pretty good chance we'd be totally fine with Barrymore’s maternity style this season had she not been forced to walk the red carpet alongside so many other pregnant A-listers, like Kerry Washington and Olivia Wilde, who have nailed their style every time they’re spotted out and about. And while Barrymore has certainly taken some risks with her looks this time around, her outfits just haven't hit the mark the way Kerry Washington's Prada crop top and Ciara's menswear looks have.

But with so many things going on for the busy star — she just released a new book and is starring in an upcoming film with Adam Sandler — we're almost certain Barrymore has more important things to think about than the way she's dressing her baby bump. And honestly, we can't say we blame her.
