This Super Bowl Ad Will Make You Sob

by Rachel Simon

Some Super Bowl ads are meant to make you laugh; others are meant to make you think. And some are meant to make you sob a million tears while wanting to adopt 1000 puppies at once. Thus was the case of the Heinz Ketchup ad, which featured dogs dressed as hot dogs running down a field towards towards a group of waiting people dressed as ketchup bottles. And the song in the ketchup Super Bowl commercial made it even sweeter, as the tune was Harry Nilsson's classic 1972 tearjerker, "Without You."

The song was perfectly fitting for the ad, which broke hearts due to its depiction of adorable wiener puppies/hot dogs running towards their happy humans/ketchup bottles. The lyrics, like "I can't live if living is without you/I can't live, I can't give anymore" were made all the more poignant by the sight of the little dogs running towards their owners, who, according to the brand's Youtube, are all Heinz family members. The dogs showed true determination, as as the caption to the ad read, "There comes a time in every wiener dog’s life when you look in the full length doggy mirror and ask yourself, am I going to be a plain old boring hot dog forever? Or am I going to jump this rusty chain link fence and join the rest of the wieners in an epic stampede across the globe?"

Clearly, these pups chose the latter, and made the Super Bowl a sweeter (if more tear-filled) place for everyone watching. There really is nothing like the sight of hot dog-dressed puppies running towards a bunch of ketchup-wearing humans to make you reach for the tissues.
