Could This Chart Predict Who You'll Marry?

If you want to tie the knot one day, could your career predict the person you’re going to marry? Bloomberg Business thinks so, having scanned data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2014 American Community Survey (which covers 3.5 million households) to find out if there are any ties between your love life and your career. The chart, which includes same-sex couples, is ridiculously detailed, complete with almost every profession one could imagine having. Don’t worry though, they have a search option in case you don’t want to look through the seemingly hundreds of careers they’ve provided matches for.

While some of the results seem more understandable and likely of a marital match — for instance, the most common marriage of all careers are between two grade school teachers — others proved more interesting, like the fact that high-earning women (doctors, lawyers, etc.) hook up with economic equals, while middle and lower-earning women tend to marry men and women making more. Also interesting, female CEOs marry other CEOs, while male CEOs are likely to marry secretaries.

1. Writers And Authors...

Female writers and authors were most likely to marry men in management positions. They were also known to marry male chief executives and and post-secondary teachers. Male and female writers were also known to marry within their own profession. Similarly, male writers were shown to marry male editors.

2. Marketing And Sales Managers...

Most male marketing and sales managers were most likely to marry female elementary and middle school teachers. Other female matches include: female managers, and insurance claims and policy processing clerks. Male marketing and sales managers married female registered nurses, business operations specialists, and male managers.

3. Designers...

Female designers were most likely to marry male managers. Both men and women matched within the same industry, but male designers would also marry male secretaries and female elementary and middle school teachers. Female designers were found to marry female chief executives and legislators as well.

4. Bartenders...

Female bartenders were most likely to marry male truck drivers, but were also shown to marry managers, carpenters, retail salespersons, and female transportation ticket agents and travel clerks. Male bartenders were shown to primarily marry waitresses.

5. Hairdressers, Hairstylists, And Cosmetologists...

These women were most likely to marry male truck drivers, but also male managers, construction laborers, carpenters, and janitors. Male hairdressers were shown to marry male designers.

6. Chefs And Head Cooks...

Male chefs and head cooks would most likely marry waitresses, but also married cashiers, registered nurses, food service managers, female maids, and both would marry those already within the industry.

7. Secretaries and Administrative Assistants...

Female secretaries were most likely to marry managers, but were also shown to marry male truck drivers, janitors, retail supervisors, chief executives and legislators, and female flight attendants.

8. Actors...

Actors were both most likely to marry within the industry. Female actors were also found to marry female designers and male managers. Male actors would marry male camera operators and editors, female secretaries, and female lawyers and judges.

9. Dancers...

Female dancers and choreographers were most likely to marry welders, but were also shown to marry male chief executives and legislators, civil engineers, and others within the industry. Male dancers and choreographers married male secretaries.

10. Police Officers...

Male police officers were most likely to marry female elementary and middle school teachers, but were also shown to marry registered nurses and secretaries.
