See Selena Gomez's Reaction To T. Swift's Speech

by Emily Lackey

Monday as an emotional night, with a number of the Grammy Award winners breaking into tears as they accepted their awards. But, when Taylor Swift took the stage to accept Album of the Year and spoke to the young girls in the audience — specifically, she told them to work hard and take credit for their accomplishments — it was Swift's date that started to get emotional. That's right: It was Selena Gomez who was choking up over Swift's empowering message, and, believe me, she had every reason to.

The speech was an incredible one, especially given its timing. Swift was, no doubt, subtly responding to Kanye West's lyrics about her in his new song "Famous," in which he attempts to take credit for her success ("I made that b*tch famous," he rapped) just because he interrupted her MTV VMAs speech in 2009 — and her response is nothing short of badass and inspiring:

"As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame, but, if you just focus on the work and you don't let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you're going you'll look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world. Thank you for this moment."

See? It's no surprise that Gomez was moved to near-tears by her friend and Grammy date's speech.

The moment was an incredibly touching one, and it's no wonder that Gomez was affected by it so deeply. Her tears were undoubtedly a mix of pride for her friend and understanding for what she herself has faced as a young woman in a tough business.
