Although they initially kept their relationship on the down low, Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik made things official in his "Pillowtalk" music video. After that, there was no doubt about whether they're together. Despite the fact that these two seem perfectly content with their black-and-white selfies and flirty tweets, not everybody is shipping ZiGi. When someone critiqued her runway walk and dissed her dating life, Hadid stood up for herself perfectly.
According to E! Online, the Twitter troll's since-deleted tweet said, "practise how to walk properly instead of having a new bf every 2 weeks." The supermodel's response? A picture of Malik covering his mouth. Then, she added, "I've dated 3 guys in 3 yrs, hun. My walk can always get better; I hope the unrelated bitterness in ur heart can too." Did you hear that? That was the mic dropping. Props to Hadid for not stooping to this person's level; instead, she wished them all the best and defended herself.
While I'm over here clapping at her response, it's also frustrating that this happened in the first place. As she points out, she's dated three people in a three-year span. But who's business is that anyway? A similar struggle happened with her BFF Taylor Swift, where she became known as a serial dater, simply for living her life and dating guys. Who should be able to decided how much dating is too much? Also, why isn't this something guys are critiqued for, too? They date just as often.
It truly is unfair that her reputation is reduced to what guy is standing by her side. This is something that Ariana Grande previously was vocal about too, in an epic feminist rant she posted on Instagram about not being any guy's property. That message resonates here too. Hadid shouldn't have to defend her love life — and neither should any other woman. It's totally her prerogative if she wants to date, and however many guys that may be is her business.
The fact that this has happened to Hadid, Swift, and Grande shows it's an unfair trend against women in Hollywood — and beyond. They're talented and so much more than who they date, so let's stop categorizing or judging them because of the choices in their personal lives. Even if they wanted to date a new guy every week, that should be their decision.
So while I applaud Hadid's response to the haters, it's a shame she even needed to defend herself in the first place.
