EXCLUSIVE: 'DIANA' Director Talks Princess' Truth

"It is the story that nobody really knows about," is, perhaps, how most tragic and untold stories begin. However, most everybody remembers the life and death of Diana Spencer, the Princess of Wales. Hers was a tale spun out of control with paparazzi obsession, a loveless marriage, and a desire for something more — at least as evidenced in the Naomi Watts-fronted depiction, DIANA . But according to the film's director, there was plenty about the princess's life that was not truthfully or wholly explained.

In the Bustle.com exclusive clip below, Hirschbiegel describes the film's central relationship: not between the princess and Prince Charles or even Dodi Fayed, but rather Dr. Hasnat Khan. Described by several of her close friends in s 2007 BBC special as "the love of her life," the precursor relationship to Fayed was a close-guarded secret. According to Hirschbiegel, theirs was a love star-crossed and life-changing for the princess trapped in a marriage she wasn't happy in that had fidelity problems on both sides of the equation. Sometimes being royalty isn't all that movies would have you believe its cracked up to be.

"We sort of correct history here," Hirschbiegel purports. "Or the perception of what really happened."

Out on DVD tomorrow, the film "depicts the last two years of her life, and starts out at a time when her life sort of stalled," explained director Oliver Hirschbiegel. DIANA, starring Naomi Watts as the titular character alongside Naveen Andrews, Douglas Hodge, and Charles Edwards. It arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray Tuesday, February 11th.
