Will Megyn Kelly Actually Interview Donald Trump?

by Andi O'Rourke

When a journalist from a rival news network saw Megyn Kelly herself duck into Trump Tower this morning in Manhattan, it set the internet abuzz with speculation. So, will Megyn Kelly interview Donald Trump? Apparently we'll find out Wednesday on The Kelly File.

According to Ayman Mohyeldin, foreign correspondent for NBC News and anchor on MSNBC, Megyn Kelly was seen walking into Trump Tower in midtown Manhattan this morning at approximately 11 a.m. ET, and stayed for around an hour. Beth Fouhy, a senior editor for MSNBC's website, seconded Mohyeldin's statement, and a spokesperson from the Trump campaign also confirmed the visit.

What could Kelly have been up to for the approximately 60 minutes from when she entered Trump Tower until she left? Neither Mohyeldin, nor the Trump campaign, made any mention of a camera crew; however, that isn't to say that an interview didn't take place. If an interview did happen, it is likely that the crew would have been on the scene before Kelly's 11 a.m. arrival was noted by the media to set up, so as not to inconvenience the principals.

Fox News also released a statement, saying "Kelly has acknowledged in recent interviews that Trump is a fascinating person to cover and has electrified the Republican base," and also confirmed that the results of the encounter between the two GOP figureheads would be presented on this evening's episode of The Kelly File.

Kelly's working relationship with the local slumlord and Republican presidential frontrunner has been frayed in recent months by Trump's casual misogyny and gender-based attacks, like connecting her with the derogatory slang term "bimbo," and attacking her professional credibility. Trump even went so far as to refuse to appear in a debate she moderated. "Megyn Kelly's really biased against me. ... Do you really think she can be fair at a debate?" he asked his followers on Instagram.

Trump has had more than his fair share of free media coverage throughout the election cycle so far. If Kelly did in fact end up interviewing Trump without incident, at least the public knows that Kelly will bring her sizable interviewing chops to the table, and make sure to keep the former reality TV star as accountable as is possible. If the interview didn't actually go down, then it's also pretty likely that an interesting story will come out nonetheless. We'll just have to wait and see.
