T. Swift Has Big Plans For Her Musical Break

by Kadeen Griffiths

The words "Taylor Swift" and "break" are sure to strike fear into the hears of any fan unless the phrase they're in is "I'm taking a break to listen to Taylor Swift." During an interview with Vogue, however, fans may have panicked when the 1989 singer informed the world that she was in no rush to create new music. Swift taking a break from music shouldn't be the finite sentence that it sounds like, however. As the woman herself explains, she's not really calling it a break, because "I’m always going to be writing songs. The thing is, with me, I could very well come up with three things in the next two weeks and then jump back into the studio, and all of a sudden the next record is started. That’s an option, too." As for the other options for what Swift is doing on her break, well, they're actually very commendable and admirable. Then again, no Swiftie is surprised to hear that.

According to the pop icon, the last year since 1989 came out has been so epic that Swift now feels she is in a good place to take some time to herself and relax. But of course she's not a passive relaxer. No, instead her idea of relaxation involves self-improvement and making time to do all the little things she didn't really have time to do before: "I would really like to take a little time to learn things. I have lots of short-term goals. I want to be a well-rounded person who can make a good drink. To be able to save somebody if they’re drowning. So CPR, all the various kinds of chest compressions. People tell you little tips, but that’s different from actually taking a class and getting certified."

So, instead of spending all weekend in her sweatpants watching Netflix and refusing to leave the house, Swift is doing all of that and finding time to learn how to save lives and make a good cocktail. What is it about Swift that can make the rest of us feel so lazy? (Especially the rest of us who are around her age, like me, but have accomplished nothing more significant than eating Cool Ranch Doritos for breakfast.) She might also learn to change a tire and create her own fashion line one day, and that's just kind of who she is. In her own words, "O do things like this. [Once] I got it in my head that I couldn’t do a split, and I was really upset about it. And so I stretched every single day for a year until I could do a split. Somehow I feel better knowing that I can."

But don't worry at all, because, though Swift has said all of these things, she could very well be making music as we speak. It's in her heart and soul, after all, so treat this break as more like a lunch break during your shift than a hiatus into an indefinite future like, say, the One Direction break. Swift will be back, and probably sooner than you think.
