When it comes to nitty-gritty topics, Lena Dunham is never one to shy away from the truth. Just look at any episode of Girls or her book Not That Kind Of Girl. When it comes to her reproductive health, the 29-year-old has been incredibly open about her struggle with endometriosis, even taking a break from her press tour in February because of it. On Tuesday night, Dunham was honored by the Endometriosis Foundation of America at their annual Blossom Ball. Her co-star Allison Williams was there for support and introduced Dunham on stage. Cosmopolitan shared an excerpt of Williams' speech, in which she applauded Dunham's bravery. She said,
I've only seen a flicker of fear on her face a few times, and it is when she, like so many of you, has been made to feel afraid of what endometriosis could mean for her life. Confronting it daily and vigilantly is a stunning show of bravery, and I'm in awe of all of you who confront it with that same fear. She is brave, I agree. And she is formidable even in the face of something she fears. So I actually wanted to close by giving my condolences to anyone out there who has ever tried to hurt Lena. It turned out that, like Achilles before her, only a part of Lena's own body can wound her, and even then, she will win.
That analogy at the end is the ultimate mic drop. Dunham has faced her share of critics, but as Williams points out, they don't get her down. Even when the Girls creator may feel like her own body is betraying her, she still keeps fighting and doesn't give up. When talking to People before the event, Dunham said, "I have been treating myself like a delicate, delicate flower." She knows when to listen to her body and give it the care it needs.
Not only did she support Dunham on stage, but Williams also shared a selfie afterwards. In the caption, she wrote, "This one. Got to talk about how brilliant she is for a few minutes last night at the Blossom Ball. @lenadunham I love you. F*ck Endometriosis." I love this, because it shows that they're more than just co-stars; they're friends IRL. Their bond seems unbreakable, just like Marnie and Hannah. Although, I'd like to think that neither is as self-absorbed as their characters are on the show. But even so, Marnie and Hannah have each other's backs through it all — from failed jobs to broken relationships.
Showing the love is mutual, Dunham later posted an Instagram from the red carpet. She thanked her pal for having her back, writing, "Allison's speech made me laugh a lot and cry too, just like she does when she plays Marnie or tells me a story about when she was in 4th grade." How sweet is that? All those feelings are warranted, considering Williams' touching speech.
Just like their Girls characters, Dunham and Williams are there through the tough times. I'd also like to think that the "Dancing On My Own" dance parties aren't just part of the show, but their real-life friendship. Fans can only hope!
