11 Comprehensive 'Pretty Little Liars' Theories That Lead to A's True Identity

Oh boy, was last week's noir themed Pretty Little Liars episode a real trip. The episode — which took place in a Spencer's Adderrall-fueled fugue state — had the liars chasing down clues about Ezra (well, except for Aria, who was too busy making out with him) while finally catching up to Ali, who had taken up a job as a dancer in a sleazy 1940's bar. When we finally returned to modern-day Rosewood, Spencer realizes that Ezra changed the words in Alison's diaries to make the clues that they found useless. Luckily for smartypants Spencer, she made copies of the unedited journal pages, and is now one step ahead of Ezra and whomever he is working with. This week, the girls finally confront Aria about Ezra's involvement with Alison — and we're at the edge of our seats waiting to see what will happen next. Is Ezra A? Is Mona still evil?

Though Ezra is definitely top of the A-suspect list, there are a ton of other shady individuals lurking around Rosewood. Is Ezra a distraction for the other people out to get the liars? Is Ezra's involvement with Alison not what it appears to be? Does Mona have the liars best intentions at heart after their post-fire bonding sesh?

Fans online are abuzz with theories about what's really going down on the ABC Family soap. Here are the biggest, wildest theories fans have come up.

Hey, Ezra Isn't Actually A Bad Guy!

After the A-fake-out with Toby last year, fans are skeptical to believe that Ezra, Aria’s loyal teacher/boyfriend, would REALLY be out to get the liars. Some theories believe that Ezra is actually working to find A in order to protect the one true love of his life, Aria. Other theories suggest that Ezra is looking out for Alison — whom he had a, uh, “friendship” with — in order to protect her, much like Shana was. A third theory says that Ezra is a private detective hired by Jason or Alison’s parents to find Ali. Though Ali is thought of as dead, he just can’t drop the hunt. He doesn’t want Aria to find out because finding Ali might put him — and her — in danger.

Another really interesting theory I found on the internet is that Ezra isn’t actually involved in the whole main Alison plot at all. Instead, Ezra is writing a crime novel about Aria and her friends based on the “murder” of Ali and is taking it just a little bit too seriously.

Ezra Is Evil... But He Might Not Be A.

I’m a little skeptical about Ezra being A. While it would have been a fantastic twist for this season, I doubt that the writers would give away a major A candidate so easily. That being said, there’s no way that the writers will pull another Toby-esque twist. Fans think that Ezra might not BE A, but may be on the A payroll, much like CeCe Drake. Another twist is that Ezra isn’t board shorts at all, but a friend or relative of the guy Ali was hooking up with. Maybe Ezra doesn’t want Alison for himself, but is planning on finding her and delivering her to someone who does want to hurt her.

Mona Is Protecting the Liars

There’s no doubt that Mona was A at one point, but during Season 3’s fire, she admitted that she didn’t know who red coat was. Plus, Mona did make an effort to save Hanna’s mother from prison. Could she be working with Ezra to protect the liars from him or someone else who wants to hurt them?

Someone Has An Evil Twin

While we aren’t sure if she’s joking with The Daily Edition or not, Tammin Sursok who plays Jenna on Pretty Little Liars hinted that we would find out that someone has a twin sister. While Alison is the main suspect here as she did have a twin in the book series we don’t think that the show will go the same route. Who else could have a secret twin? There are tons of options, but fans are suspecting that it could be Ezra (maybe his twin sister is someone we already know, like CeCe Drake), Aria, or even Spencer.

Could Detective Holbrook Be Board Shorts?

What if Spencer is — gasp! — wrong about Ezra? There’s another suspect on the Board Shorts list who is almost as suspicious. There are approximately a million clues to suggest why Holbrook is not to be trusted, even outside of the fact that he’s a cop in Rosewood and therefore not to be trusted by default. Remember in the Halloween episode, when Aria found suits in the closet of A’s lair? Holbrook looks mighty good in a suit. While we aren’t sure of the motivation, we do know that Holbrook was part of the team that helped put Hanna’s mom behind bars for a little while, and that seems a tad suspicious to us. His interest in James Patterson novels strikes us as a little bit odd as well… but not as much as his interest in the underage Hanna does.

Ali Is Framing The Liars

In this week’s episode, Spencer suspected Alison of framing her former friends for something. Someone already framed the girls for Alison’s death by having them find the shovel. What if Ali is looking to frame them for something bigger — say, a murder of one of Alison’s enemies?

Toby's Mom Is Involved With Alison

The dementia patient Dr. Palmer told Toby and Spencer to keep Toby’s mother away from “the blond girl,” which sounds like Alison to us. Plus, we recently learned that Mrs. DiLaurentis was on the Board of Directors at Radley, and that Spencer’s dad desperately wants to keep Radley from closing. We know that Toby’s mother “fell” off the roof while another patient was up there with her… but we don’t know who that is. Could it have been Alison, or at least someone close to her? Could it have been CeCe Drake after she got kicked out of UPenn and had a breakdown? Either way, all roads would lead back to Ali D.

Seriously, What's Up With Jesse?

There’s a whole lot of speculation about the new guidance counselor who seems to have inexplicably appeared at Rosewood High just as Ezra started acting sketchy. He’s already tight with Mona and Aria’s brother Mike (whom the show has decided now exists again) which is pretty strange in our book. Could he be A-Team material? Only time will tell.

All Roads Lead To Wren

Could Wren be the guy that Ali is afraid of? While we’re not convinced that his adorable accent and boyish charm screams killer, he definitely has some skeletons in his closet. Though we haven’t seen much of Wren since Mona’s quick stint in Radley, we definitely got the vibes that he was up to no good. He drew a picture of a girl in a red coat (creepy!) and even Mona doesn’t seem to trust him. Plus, his medical pad turned up in A’s lair recently, making us think that if Wren isn’t Board Shorts, he might actually be A.

Spencer Tried To Hurt Ali

In Spencer’s imaginative noir state, Ali confronts Spencer and asks if she should be the one that Ali is really afraid of. Later she quips that Spencer already tried to have Ali killed once. While we assumed that was a snide comment about her spying on Emily, what if Spencer really did try to hurt Ali before her disappearance and blocked it out of her memory? We know that Spencer has a history with mental issues and she’s currently on a whole bunch of drugs.

Aria is A!

There’s a whole group of fans online who think that Aria is, in fact, A. Why? Well for one thing, Aria has been the least targeted by the A-Team (at least compared with liars like poor, almost-ran-over-in-the-middle-of-her-living-room Emily.) Some fans even suggest that Aria and Ezra have been playing a Bonnie-and-Clyde type game with one another this whole time! Would the show really make a liar the one that they currently fear the most?
