Cate Honors Philip Seymour Hoffman at BAFTAs

by Ivy Jacobson

During the BAFTA awards in London on Sunday, Cate Blanchett won the Best Actress award for Blue Jasmine. The actress had previously been seen grieving the loss of her dear friend and co-star, Philip Seymour Hoffman, at his wake and funeral two weeks before. So, Blanchett took her win as an opportunity to honor Philip Seymour Hoffman with a touching and emotional speech. It was the first time she had publicly spoken about her The Talented Mr. Ripley co-star since his death.

Blanchett stated:

I would like to dedicate this to an actor who has been a continual, profound touchstone for me, a monumental presence who is now so sadly in absence: the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman, says Blanchett. Phil, your monumental talent, your unflinching quest for truth both in art and in life will be missed by so many people. You raised the bar continually. Phil, buddy, this is for you, you bastard. Hope you're proud.

Blanchett also spoke lovingly about her friendship with Hoffman in the press room after the awards ceremony.

I don't think I'm alone in the room having been profoundly influenced by Phil and his body of work, but also who by he was as a person, says Blanchett. He was the most extraordinary friend to so many people. His influence, I think... I mean, time will tell just how deep it was. If I could be half the actor he was in his unfortunately short life, I'll be very happy.
