If there's anything more important than the horses at the Kentucky Derby, it's the fashion. While most people opt for a simple sunhat or dainty dress, Johnny Weir's Kentucky Derby outfit is always a little more over the top. Trading in his usual crazy headpieces for something a bit more tech-y, Weir wore a horse shaped pin powered by social media to the event this year that you truly need to see to believe.
There were two races going on at the event this year and one was something a little less traditional. At first glance, you might think that Weirs' horse brooch was just your typical pin, but there's much more to it than meets the eye. While the Derby horses were out running on the track, another was doing some stationary running on Weir's jacket. Who is the jockey, you ask? Well, you are!
As more Kentucky Derby traffic is generated on Twitter, the horse attached to his outfit gallops faster. The pin even changes color as it gets picks up speed. All you have to do to make his brooch start running is post #WatchMeNeighNeigh on Twitter and the horse will start moving its legs. The whole idea was engineered and designed Viget as a way to tie together social interaction, fan interaction, and the Kentucky Derby broadcast like never before. It seems like they succeeded, if you ask me. Check out a sneak peek of the brooch below.
Now check the accessory out in full action.
That's one stylish brooch. Here's his look from head to toe. Notice that he completely matches the horse in the accessory.
The brooch isn't the only accessory Weir wore to the event. He's all about bright colors and bold looks this year, with his bright pink crown and braid hat.
This isn't the first time the Weir has showed up wearing something to talk about. In the past, the fashion focus has always been on the huge hats though. Here's a few of his most over-the-top looks so far.
1. Rose Crown
It was clear to see who was crowned style winner at this Kentucky Derby. While the flowers normally don't show up until end of the event, Weir showed up with a rose bouquet on top of his head.
If those are all real, then kudos to him for not getting stung.
He could've gone matchy-matchy with rose shoes, but he kept to gold and black slip-ons instead.
2. Head-To-Toe White
I'm not completely sure what's going on with this look, but it reads very Swan Lake to me.
This one was his tallest headpiece yet.
3. Oversized Sunhat
There's oversized sunhats and then there's this. He was not holding back at all as far as race fashion goes.
The other one might be his tallest, but this one is definitely the widest.
This man could wear anything and look great!
