7 Hair Products You're Not Using, But Should Be

by Sienna Fantozzi

There are so many hair care products out there these days that it's borderline overwhelming trying to decipher what you need and what you don't. Plus, it's all too easy to get locked into your comfort zone of shampoo and conditioner, but it might be time for a switch-up. You might not even realize that there could be several hair products you're not using in the shower that you should be, depending on what your hair needs are. If your hair falls into one of these categories, then you might want to consider adding in some new products.

I prefer to keep my beauty routine as low-maintenance as possible, and I hate spending any extra money on products, but in order to keep your hair as healthy and strong as possible, sometimes it's worth spending an extra ten minutes, or an extra few bucks to make sure you're giving your hair exactly what it needs. Since that does vary from person to person, I've broken down by category a few hair products that you're probably not using in the shower, but definitely should be. Some of them are more obvious, but there are others you may be missing that you haven't even realized.

If You Have Highlights

TIGI Bed Head, $16.50, drugstore.com

Highlights can oxidize and turn brassy over time, so you should absolutely be shampooing with a purple shampoo. The purple pigments help cancel out the brassy orange/yellow/red tones, but it can be drying, so only use it once a month or so, and do it in conjunction with a hair mask or deep conditioner.

If You Dye Your Hair

Color Wow, $22, net-a-porter.com

Dye lightens and doesn't look as bold over time, so to maintain your color, shampoo with a color depositing shampoo (which adds pigment to your hair) to help extend your color.

If Your Hair Is Dry/Dehydrated

Moroccan Oil Intense Hydrating Mask; $35; moroccanoil.com

Using heat on your hair frequently or spending a lot of time in the sun can dry out your hair, so it's important to use a deep conditioning mask once a week to restore hydration.

If You Have Thin Hair

Bumble & Bumble, $25, net-a-porter.com

It doesn't all come down to styling — fuller hair starts in the shower. Try using a volumizing shampoo and conditioner to give yourself a boost.

If Your Hair Is Color Damaged

Olaplex, $21.99, sleekhair.com

Coloring your hair can wreck havoc on it, so it's important to use the right products. Olaplex reconnects broken disulfide sulfur bonds in the hair (which break during the coloring process), to help repair your hair. This is a great product to use immediately after color services until your hair feels back to normal.

If Your Hair Is Weak/Brittle

Nutiva Organic Virgin Coconut, $11.89, shop-links.co

If your hair is weak, you may need to add some protein back into it. Try using coconut oil to add protein/prevent protein loss, but use it in conjunction with conditioner, because it can be drying.

If You Have Frizz

Anti-Frizz Shampoo, $25, livingproof.com

Serums are amazing at fighting frizz, but you can go one-step further by using a frizz-fighting shampoo & conditioner.
