Adele Wins Top Artist At The BBMAs

by Lia Beck

It was a tough race this year, but when it came down to it Adele won Top Artist at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards. Adele faced off against Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Drake, and The Weeknd, all of whom are also huge names in pop music at the moment. All of these artists, like Adele, were nominated for many other awards during the night, in particular The Weeknd, who was the top nominated musician of the night with 19 nominations.

Earlier in the night, Adele won the award for Top Billboard 200 Album and debuted her new music video for "Send My Love" even though she wasn't actually in attendance at the show. Adele is currently on tour — her Sunday night stop was in Portugal — so she recorded two video messages to accept her awards that were played during the broadcast. Since she had already been seen once when she accepted the award for Top Artist, it was only fitting that she start her video for that award, "Hello. It's me. Again," quoting her smash hit "Hello." It was almost so casual that I wonder if it was a mistake, but either way, it surely gave fans a chuckle.

Adele's 25 came out too late to be eligible for this year's Grammys, so the BBMAs mark the first big wins for the singer and her latest album, but there are sure to be more to come for the singer. Get used to hearing Adele's name at every award show you watch in the next year. This is just the beginning.
