5 Tips For Applying Makeup When You're Sweaty

Memorial Day weekend brings the official start of summer, and for most of us that means that the weather is about to get hot fast. Whether you're living through this week's New York heatwave or live in sunny-all-the-time San Diego, you're likely dealing with one of the inevitable downfalls of summer: makeup melting off your face. Luckily, these tips for how to apply makeup when you're sweaty will make you look refreshed, not just a little too dewy.

When it gets extra hot during the summer, it seems like my face is never truly sweat-free, even moments after stepping out of the shower. And there's nothing worse than feeling like your makeup is melting down your face. When it's nice outside, I usually want to be spending time outdoors, not inside doing my makeup. That's why I stick to a few key products and apply them in a way that ensures they stay put all day. However, I do like to wear a little bit of makeup every day, so I try to find products that are fast, provide great coverage, and don't make me look even dewier than I already do.

These five tips will help you apply makeup perfectly, even when you're sweating.

1. Blot Your Face Before You Start Applying

Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets, $5, Amazon

Blotting papers can be perfect for soaking up oil on-the-go, but they're also a great way to prep your face before you start putting on makeup. They'll soak up any oil or sweat and make sure you have a clean surface to apply makeup to.

2. Use A Toner

Boots Botanics Shine Away Mattifying Toner, $8, T arget

Toner is great for evening out your skin tone, but the right one can also make your skin look more matte and calm down any redness before your start putting on makeup.

3. Store Your Products In The Fridge

This is a classic tip, but storing your moisturizer, toner, or lotion in the refrigerator can be a great way to quickly cool your face down when you're applying makeup. If you're like me and rosacea pops up when you're hot, this can be a good way to calm your skin down.

4. Use A Sponge Or Brush To Apply

Beautyblender Original, $20, Amazon

One of the great things about applying your makeup with your fingers is that it helps warm up the products and gets them to melt into your skin better. But what if those products are just a little too melty? That's why using a product to apply your foundation, like a Beautyblender sponge or fluffy brush, can be a good choice.

5. Stick To Matte Blush Or Stain

Benefit Benetint, $30, Benefit Cosmetics

When your face is already looking dewy, blush with shiny flecks in it can just make your face look shinier. Stick to a matte blush or a stain like Benefit's Benetint, which will sink into your face but not add any shine.

6. Finish With Powder

Bare Minerals Mineral Veil SPF 25, $22, Bare Minerals

I like dusting my face with a preventative coat of powder when I know it's hot out and I'm going to be outside. I love Bare Minerals Mineral Veil, and when I'm looking for a little extra sun protection, I stick to this or Colorescience mineral sunscreen.
