Drake's "One Dance" May Rule The Summer

by Kristie Rohwedder

The solstice is almost here, so you know what that means: The hottest songs of the hottest season of the year must be declared. Billboard has released the first round of its annual Songs of Summer chart, and just as Shazam predicted, a Drake tune is the first No. 1 summer track of summer 2k16 (and no, it’s not “Summer Sixteen”) (but that would’ve been cute!). Raise a glass of Hennessy, because the top song of the first week of Billboard’s summer chart is “One Dance” by Drake featuring WizKid and Kyla.

Yup. Yup. That feels about right. It looks like the delightful and good and catchy and inescapable and buoyant and oh-so beachy "One Dance" is raring to do the thing "Hotline Bling" would've done if that sweater-clad music video dropped in July instead of October: rule the summer. And I'm beyond OK with that.

This week's Song of Summer first runner-up is “Panda” by Deiigner. In third, we have “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” by Justin Timberlake, “Work From Home” by Fifth Harmony featuring Ty Dolla $ign claims the fourth place slot, and “Don’t Let Me Down” by the Chainsmokers featuring Daya rounds out the top five.

So how does this chart work, exactly? Take it away, Billboard.com:

The 20-position Songs of the Summer running tally tracks the most popular titles based on cumulative performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart from Memorial Day through Labor Day. At the end of the season, the top song of the summer will be crowned.

Will Drake’s dancehall-tinged banger reign supreme until Labor Day, or will another warm weather-friendly tune pry the Summer ’16 crown out of Jimmy Brooks's hands? Hey, don’t look at me! Unlike Shazam, I’m no soothsayer; I can offer up some guesses (my money is always on my queens Rihanna and 5H), but I don't have the actual answer. I wish I did, but I do not. Sorry.

Do you know what I do have? A clip of a dancing zombie Aubrey Graham, that's what:

Pro tip: Mute this video and play "One Dance" while you watch it on a loop. Happy summer!
