The Best Way To Deal With A Summer Breakup

When you're dealing with a breakup in the summer, it can initially feel like the end of the world. Suddenly, gone are those romantic weekend trips to the beach, the cross-country road trip you’ve been planning, and all that sweaty, hot sex that you two enjoyed the summer before. Instead you’re left standing there, wondering what the hell you’re supposed to do now. Who else is going to tolerate you for a week in a car while you sing along to Top 40 classics from the ‘80s!?

While summer isn’t usually a big season for breakups, they still happen. Which, if you we look at the glass being half full instead of half empty, isn’t necessarily a bad thing. You may not have a romantic partner at your side 24/7, but you have the beach, the warm weather, summer Fridays off from work, and that amazing polka dot swimsuit. So, really what’s the problem?

Instead of moping and crying into your swan float at your neighborhood pool, pull yourself together. This is going to be a great summer for you! Here are some ways to deal with a summer breakup.

1. Make A Breakup Playlist

When I go through a breakup, I always make myself a breakup playlist of happy songs that make me feel like I can take on the world. Also, it’s the summer; summers are made for playlists.

2. Block Your Ex

Since it is the summer, that means everyone is out having a good time and going on holidays. With that being the case, the last thing you need to see is your ex in Montauk on the beach, drinking beers, with a bunch of people you don’t know, having a fine time for themselves. Pictures like that will let your mind go to dark places — they're already dating again! — and you don’t want or need that.

3. Don’t Change Your Summer Plans

If you were supposed to go to Cape Cod for the Fourth of July with your partner, still go. Why should you go without the Cape just because you’re single? You shouldn’t. So grab a couple friends and go.

4. Have Yourself A Fling

Whether you call it a summer fling or a rebound, consider it. Even if you’re not ready to have sex with someone else yet, you can still enjoy the perks of meeting someone new. Breakups can make us feeling low and unlovable, but flings, on the other hand, ignite a little fire in our bellies.

5. Get Out Of Town

Where have you wanted to go that you haven’t been to yet? If you’re not sure, grab a map, shut your eyes, and put to someplace, any place — then go there. When you travel solo, you step out of your comfort zone and get a deeper perspective on life — something that everyone wants after a breakup.

6. Find Yourself A Project

The summer is three months long — do you know how much you can get done in three months?! Hell, you can give your whole apartment a makeover, write a book, or try every single wine that your neighborhood wine shop has in stock. The possibilities are endless and it will give you a goal. Goals are great after a breakup.

7. Get To Know Your Friends And Family Again

This isn’t to suggest that you’ve been ignoring these people while you’ve been in a relationship, but you may have put them second. So make up for lost time. Hit the beach with your friends, visit mom and dad for a week, or take your nieces and nephews camping. This part of a breakup is actually the best part, because you get to remember how many other people love you and probably missed the dickens out of you, too.
