Crystal Pepsi Won't Cost You Much

by Jessica Learish

I am what qualifies as an old Millennial. I don't have Snapchat, I remember the time before the internet, and I scratched both of my Mariah Carey CDs in my silver Sony Discman (may they rest in peace). However, I only have vague memories of the throwback known as Crystal Pepsi — a short-lived clear version of the classically brown drink that is slated to make a limited time comeback in the United States this August. So, how much will Crystal Pepsi cost, and will the price also be a throwback?

According to PepsiCo, this serving of '90s nostalgia will be sold at a suggested retail price of $1.79. That will get you a 20 oz. bottle of Crystal Pepsi and a wholesome, refreshing taste of what we imagined the future would be from the ye olde days of the very first Bush administration. According to modern food historians, Crystal Pepsi kickstarted a cultural wave of clear consumer goods, which included Coca Cola's Tab Clear, and Miller Brewing Company's Miller Clear beer. Colorless beverages were synonymous with natural, transparent ingredients. The whole zero-opacity movement collapsed of its own weight in a few short years, but one thing that never quite died was the cult following for the OG clear soda.

This eBay listing for an unopened case of Crystal Pepsi cans has a Buy It Now price of $900. That's more than I pay for a month of rent, so you might understand why Pepsi is ready to give it another go. If you need some more '90s in your life, check out this 1993 commercial, featuring a Van Halen soundtrack, introducing Crystal Pepsi as the future of the liquid consumer bubbly-fix.

If that doesn't make you feel old, I don't know what will. Pepsi is really going for it on the Millennial marketing bid though. The company has also created an Oregon Trail-themed Crystal Pepsi flash game which will launch online on July 7, just in time for the see-through soda's Canadian launch.

Now, does anybody want to share a Fruit By The Foot and a Hi-C Ectocooler?
