How Do You Get Wonder Woman's Costume Right?

Ohhhh, Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman. There's been a lot of discussion surrounding her character for, well, a long time, especially when you consider she hasn't been live-action in a very long time. The big Hollywood question, for better or for worse (and definitely for annoyance) seems to be "what the hell do we do with Wonder Woman?" This especially extends to the costume, which Batman Vs. Superman/Man Of Steel 2 costume designer Michael Wilkinson talked about in a recent interview with Coming Soon:

It's so important to get her right. She really deserves to be presented on-screen in her full glory. So what I do is I look at the history of how the character has been presented on the big-screen, and the small-screen, and in comic books, and graphic novels. We process it all. Then we kind of put that aside and work out what is right for our film, for the cinematic universe that our director Zack Snyder is putting together. We try and create a Wonder Woman that's relevant for today's audiences.

And here's what he said about fighting crime in the outfit she's still most famous for:

Absolutely! I mean, you just have to look at the gladiators from ancient Rome, they did their thing in little loin clothes and a shield….It works for Thor, it works for 300, so let’s see what happens.”

There are two intertwined reactions that came to me immediately after reading these quotes. The first was "Yay, maybe we'll actually get to SEE this costume at some point in the not hugely distant future!" The second was mainly frustration, as "[trying to] create a Wonder Woman that's relevant for today's audiences" is something that dozens of people have tried to do both onscreen and off, and it's usually where all this balls itself up into a giant sphere of pop culture anxiety.

The Man Of Steel sequel is moving forward. That we know. Unless someone high-up has a panic attack about the whole thing and decides to pull the plug, we're pretty much set. But Wonder Woman's modern costume? Man, is that a minefield for almost inevitable conflict. Do you keep her in her traditional costume despite its blatant defying of physics, perhaps citing the fact that, well, superheroes don't tend to pay much attention to the laws of physics as a general rule? Do you put her in pants? Leggings? Full-on modern Gladiator? One of those throw-over skirts women sometimes wear at the beach? Full-on armor? Do you completely desexualize, or do you play into the boobs of it all? Do you keep her in heels?

Basically: Spider-Man had it easy, y'all. This design, no matter what direction they go, will have all eyes trained on it. And no matter what they come up with, it's gonna be worth a discussion.

Let's just all agree not to go the direction of the aborted David E. Kelly show, K? Just looking at it makes my boobs anxious.
