Chewbacca Mom Responded To Dallas In A Moving Way

by Eliza Castile

Not long after she took the internet by storm with the help of an infectious laugh and some Star Wars merchandise, Candace Payne, whom you may know as Chewbacca Mom, sang "Heal The World" as a heartfelt response to recent violence in Dallas, Texas. In a Facebook Live video recorded on Saturday, Payne explained that she lives not far from the area where five police officers were killed during a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in downtown Dallas on Thursday night.

"I am thousands of miles... away from really identifying with every single ounce of pain that I know is being felt by the whole world," she said in the video. "I've been spreading joy... but I found myself the last couple days being silent because I've been so sad and so hurt by what's going on." She went on to say that she had put together an arrangement of a song to express her grief in the wake of the violence. That song was Michael Jackson's "Heal the World," which urges listeners to "make [the world] a better place." It was released on his 1991 album Dangerous .

"I felt like somebody needs to sing these lyrics again," she said, adding a warning not to expect much of her piano playing. With that, she launched into her rendition of the song. Trust me: It's guaranteed to give you Feelings-with-a-capital-"F," and not just because of her beautiful voice.

The video has been viewed nearly two million times on Facebook, and it's been shared by more than 31,000 people. "Thank you for this beautiful reminder," commented one Facebook user.

"Make a better place, y'all. Fill it with joy," Payne concluded. You can watch the moving video above, or head over to Payne's Facebook page.
