Here's How Much Candy An Eevee Needs To Evolve

Since Eevee evolutions are the hot button Pokemon topic of the moment, let’s take a moment to clear up one of the more persistent questions surrounding the whole thing: How much candy you need to evolve an Eevee in “Pokemon Go.” We’re kind of in an “if you give a mouse a cookie” situation here: If you give a mouse a cookie, it’s going to ask for a glass of milk; similarly, if you want to get yourself a Vaporeon, you’re going to need to collect the proper amount of candy first. As such, it's generally helpful to know exactly what that amount is. Right?

Somewhat surprisingly, Eevees don’t need a whole lot of candy to evolve — a mere 25 pieces will do it. Given that so many Pokemon require 50 pieces or more, this is relatively cheap, especially given how powerful the three Eevee evolutions (or “Eeveelutions,” if you will) are. In contrast, Spearows take 50 to evolve into Fearows; furthermore, while some of the more common Pokemon only require 12 or 25 candies to get to the first of their evolutions, the next level up could take as much as 100. Eevees tend to be plentiful, as well, so gathering what you need to evolve one is actually a piece of proverbial cake.

So, if you need 25 pieces of Eevee candy, how much work do you have to do in order to get there? Let’s take a look at the math. Every time you catch a Pokemon, you earn three pieces of candy; additionally, trading in a duplicate Pokemon will net you one more piece. So, assuming that every Eevee you catch adds four pieces of Eevee candy to your stash — and accounting for the fact that you earn three Eevee candies for catching the one you plan to evolve — you’ll need to catch about seven Eevees total in order to earn enough candy to evolve one of them into a Vaporeon, Flareon, or Jolteon.

Here’s how all that breaks down:

  • Eevee #1: Three pieces of candy (for catching); three pieces total.
  • Eevee #2: Four pieces of candy (three for catching, one for trading); seven pieces total.
  • Eevee #3: Four pieces of candy (three for catching, one for trading); 11 pieces total.
  • Eevee #4: Four pieces of candy (three pieces for catching, one for trading); 15 pieces total.
  • Eevee #5: Four pieces of candy (three pieces for catching, one for trading); 19 pieces total.
  • Eevee #6: Four pieces of candy (three pieces for catching, one for trading); 23 pieces total.
  • Eevee #7: Three pieces of candy (for catching); 26 pieces total.

Not too shabby, right? If you set out a Lure Module or activate some incense, I’m willing to bet you’d be able to catch and evolve an Eevee in an afternoon — maybe even in just an hour or two. Have fun, Trainers!
