Laurie Hernandez Stayed For The Closing Ceremony

by Andi O'Rourke

The Rio Olympics closing ceremony took place on Sunday, Aug. 21. It's a final celebration of all the Olympic athletes and their accomplishments, but not everyone chooses to attend. Was Laurie Hernandez at the closing ceremony? The two-time silver medalist from New Jersey was there, along with the rest of the Team USA women's gymnastics squad.

The ever expressive Hernandez and the rest of the squad were outfitted in casual white button downs and white Bermuda shorts from Ralph Lauren paired with red, white, and blue diagonal striped belts. But a peek from teammate Simone Biles' Snapchat published by People magazine showed just how ready Hernandez was for the all the action at the closing ceremonies. In Biles' Snapchat, Hernandez is seen ironing her teammate's button-down shirts with the caption "thanks roomie <3 closing ceremonie outfit." Biles then posted a photo of the two in their complete closing ceremony outfit as they prepared to take to the track.

No word yet on whether or not the pair, and the rest of Team USA, were negatively affected by the blustery, wet weather during the final parade. But it looks like Hernandez's ironing game is so on point that the weather might not have had that much of an impact on their look.

Hernandez's Olympic debut has already started to make waves in her community stateside, as well. While Olympic years typically result in a bump of amateur athletes (and their parents) seeking out classes in the hopes of winning a gold or two in a decade or so, coaches in Hernandez's home state of New Jersey have noticed a serious uptick in the number of new potential Olympians.

"I've been here for eight years and I expected it, but nothing like this," Monmouth Gymnastics manager Christine Malla told NJ.com. "I don't know if we were truly prepared." Hernandez trains at Monmouth Gymnastics on their Elite team, and is so serious about her sport that she has elected not to compete as a student athlete while attending the University of Florida, instead electing to keep competing with the best of the world in the international arena.

So, to recap: Laurie Hernandez walked away from the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics with three medals, a new nickname, international fame, and a sponsorship deal with Crest to show off her winning smile some more. Not bad for her first Olympics!
