Hillary Clinton Has A Hell Of A Poker Face

On Monday night, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton sat down for a few yuks on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and let's just say she didn't disappoint. For all the criticism she's faced throughout her public life about not seeming authentic, or at ease, or able to naturally smile or laugh ― much of which ranges anywhere from undeniably gendered to overtly sexist ― she's got a pretty natural charisma when things turn to comedy. And if you want proof, here's a good example: Watch Hillary Clinton read Donald Trump quotes while trying not to laugh or crack a smile.

That was the challenge Kimmel threw down on Clinton, pulling a fishbowl full of Trump quotes out from behind his desk ― neatly adorned with a gross-looking, unkempt blonde wig, naturally ― and asked her to pluck some out and read them aloud, but to try to keep a straight face while doing so.

And as it turns out, Clinton would probably be a dynamo poker player. While they weren't necessarily the funniest of Trump's lines to begin with ― on the contrary, they reflected more of his tendency for self-promotion and vulgar abuse, which allowed her to assert a sort of stoic moral high ground ― she indeed got through all three of them stone-faced. Go ahead and take a look at the video.

If you're not in the video-watching mood, here are the three Trump quotes Clinton read aloud:

• "I think apologizing is a great thing, but you have to be wrong. I will absolutely apologize, sometime in the hopefully distant future, if I'm ever wrong."

• "Number one, I have great respect for women. I was the one that really broke the glass ceiling on behalf of women, more than anybody in the construction industry."

• "If I were running The View, I'd fire Rosie O'Donnell. I'd look right in that fat, ugly face of hers, and say, 'Rosie, you're fired.'"

She looked a little startled before she read that last one, which is just one of Trump's vicious attacks on Rosie O'Donnell from over the years, and afterwards, she remarked, "that's not funny." It was a moment that seemed to serve her well, easily displaying both a willingness to play along in a comedic setting and a palpable moral force.

Those weren't the only quotes she drew, though. She also started to read a fourth, but she clearly decided it was just a little too loaded for her to read, so she handed it off to Kimmel instead. The line?

I've said if Ivanka weren't my daughter, perhaps I'd be dating her.

All in all, while the segment didn't yield many great punchlines ― the quotes Clinton read aloud varied from somewhat "mild," as she put it, to that disgraceful one about O'Donnell ― it was part of a pretty successful appearance for her. She also confronted the Trump campaign's ugly recent behavior in stoking conspiracy theories about her health, and passed Kimmel's physical with flying colors, successfully twisting the lid off a pickle jar.
