13 Reasons You Should See 'Doctor Strange'

by Loretta Donelan

Doctor Strange is coming out in a couple months, and those who aren't deep in the comic book world might be wondering what all the fuss is about. Whether you're a major Marvel obsessive or just a general movie fan, you'll be wanting to check this one out when it hits theaters in Novembers. Trust me, there are plenty of reasons to see Doctor Strange : it's got magic, Benedict Cumberbatch, and some great costumes. What more could you want?

A little background for those who want to be in the know before the movie comes out on Nov. 4, 2016: the upcoming film, which is part of the massive Marvel cinematic universe, stars Cumberbatch as the titular character, a mysterious and intelligent former neurosurgeon who develops magical powers. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, and Benedict Wong will also star.

The film has withstood its share of controversies; the casting of Swinton and Cumberbatch, for one, saw the movie accused of white-washing, although Swinton defended the film as "coming from a diverse place." Others, meanwhile, have expressed concern about Cumberbatch's ability to do an American accent, but considering his abilities as an actor, that seems like a complaint without merit. How the film itself will deal with all of these issues remains a mystery, but there are many reasons you will want to check out regardless.

1. It Stars Benedict Cumberbatch

Obviously, the beloved Star Trek and Sherlock actor is a major reason to go see the movie, and many fans think that he's perfect for the role.

2. It's A Marvel Movie

The fact that it's a new Marvel movie should be enough to draw people in.

3. Dan Harmon Is On Board

Harmon, creator of Community and Rick and Morty, has done some work on the script, which is a very good sign.

4. It Will Tie Into Other Marvel Movies

Since many of the Marvel films connect, and Doctor Strange has been anticipated as a game changer, you won't want to miss out on this one if you plan on watching the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers films.

5. It Features Important Casting

While the film has had its controversies, director Scott Derickson has emphasized its diversity in casting. He told Los Angeles Daily News , "In this movie, we have about as diverse a cast as I think you can get, and that was a very conscious decision. Tilda was a way of adding diversity in terms of not just an ethereal, enigmatic, otherworldly actress playing an ethereal, enigmatic, otherworldly character, but we’re bringing a middle-aged woman who’s not 28 years-old in leather pants into the Marvel Universe in a major role.”

6. Everyone Will Be Talking About It

With all the pre-release hype its generated, Doctor Strange is sure to be a big hit, and you don't want to be the only one who hasn't seen it.

7. Doctor Strange Is An Unusual Hero

Doctor Strange is arrogant and kind of a jerk, so he'll offer a different kind of "heroism" — if you can call it that — than we usually see in Marvel movies.

8. It's Kind of Like Sherlock

On a similar note, Cumberbatch has pointed out the similarities between Doctor Strange and Sherlock Holmes, so fans of the BBC show who are looking for more than a few episodes a year should be satisfied by the actor's new role.

9. There's Magic

For those who like fantasy, like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, the Doctor Strange stories are filled with a lot more magic than audiences usually get from Marvel movies.

10. The Trailer Was Awesome

Anticipation was high, and the trailer did not disappoint.

11. It's An Origin Story

As Doctor Strange is set to be introduced in other Marvel movies, you won't want to miss the story of his beginning as a superhero.

12. It's Been Described As Psychedelic

A movie that was intended to be psychedelic and trippy should provide an artsier Marvel experience.

13. It's Got A Lot Of The Guardians of the Galaxy Team

If you enjoyed the hugely successful Guardians of the Galaxy, you're in luck; a lot of its crew worked on Doctor Strange.

Looks like you already have your early November planned out. To be safe, you should probably reserve even more time in the next 10 years for upcoming Marvel releases. That on-screen universe isn't slowing down any time soon.
