'SNL' Star Alex Moffat Knows What He's Doing

by Caroline Gerdes

There are seven special words I've always imagined myself saying — words that so many greats have uttered and that carry a legendary air of success and humor. Yes, I've dreamt of shouting at the perfect moment, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” And the crowd goes wild. But, for three new Saturday Night Live cast members, this dream just became a reality. When Saturday Night Live returns on October 1, 2016, fans will see three new faces: Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor, and Mikey Day. But, who is new SNL cast member Alex Moffat?

Moffat, Villaseñor, and Day will be filling the void left by long-time cast members Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah and one-season cast member Jon Rudnitsky, according to Deadline. While Day has been a writer on the show since 2013 and audiences know Villaseñor from America’s Got Talent, Moffat is still a little bit of a mystery. This air of mystery even permeates online as the comedian doesn’t have a Twitter account or a big YouTube presence, like so many other modern SNL cast members and hopefuls. Still, there is some information about him on the World Wide Web, and here's what you need to know about one of Saturday Night Live’s newest stars.

He's From Chicago

According to his bio on The Annoyance Theatre's site, Moffat is a proud Chicago native.

Moffat Is A Second City Alum

Like so many SNL greats before him (like Tina Fey, Bill Murray, and Amy Poehler, to name a few) Moffat performed with the Chicago comedy troupe Second City.

He's Has Performed At Notable Comedy Clubs

Moffat has performed at The Annoyance Theatre, Zanies, The Comedy Bar, and iO Chicago, according to the Chicagoist.

Uncle John

Moffat's feature film debut was SXSW movie Uncle John, currently available on iTunes.

In Chicago, Moffat starred in Ripper The Musical, according to USA Today. The outlet reported that the Chicago Tribune gave him a great review, writing, "Alex Moffat gives the sharpest performance as Watson, funny and believable as a three-dimensional character who seems to be wandering through the cartoony parameters of the show."

The El Show

Vanity Fair reported that Moffat also had a web series called The El Show with Alex Moffat, though the comedic talk show is hard to find evidence of online.

I can't wait to see what characters Moffat created on SNL this season. Who knows? He could bring us the next Matt Foley, Gilly, Gene Frenkle, or Stefon.
