Passengers to Sue Boeing After Asiana Airlines Crash

by Nuzha Nuseibeh

A law firm representing 83 of the passengers on Asiana Airlines Flight 214 announced Tuesday that it has filed preliminary legal papers to sue Boeing, the manufacturer of the 777 that crashed into San Francisco International Airport on July 6.

According to the firm, the information released by the National Transportation Safety Board has suggested that “mechanical malfunction of the auto-throttle” might be to blame for the accident, which killed three passengers and injured over 180. Apparently, the lawsuit will also inquire into how the design of the seat belts and evacuation slides made matters worse during the crash.

"My husband, my daughter, other passengers and I would not have suffered such terrible injuries if the sliding ramps and the seat belts would not have trapped us in the burning wreckage," one of the passengers wrote in the petition.

‘‘We must find the causes of the crash and demand that the problems with the airline and the aircraft are immediately resolved to avoid future tragedies,’’ one of the lawyers said in a statement on Tuesday.

Two other passengers are also taking legal action. On Monday, a Korean woman and her son sued Asiana Airlines, claiming that the jet's crew caused "an extensive litany of errors and omissions." They're hoping for about $5 million in compensation for "extreme bodily and mental injuries and economic damages," Reuters reports. Way to get some lemonade out of those lemons.
