Yes, That ’Sonic’ Movie Is Happening

by Kristie Rohwedder

Just as Sega CEO Hajime Satomi told The Worldfolio back in February, it sounds like Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade star and video game icon Sonic the Hedgehog is heading to the big screen. On Monday, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Deadpool director Tim Miller will executive produce the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and his Blur Studio colleague Jeff Fowler is set to direct. The Sony Pictures “hybrid CG-animated/live-action family film” adaptation of the '90s Sega game is slated to tuck and roll its way into theaters in 2018.

If I may be so bold, I would like to make a request: I hope the Sonic feature film includes a live-action/CGI rendering of the Casino Night Zone level from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 . I want to watch Sonic zip around a neon city where the buildings are made of slot machines and pinball games. I want to watch a bright red spring launch Sonic into the night sky, sending him straight to an inverted loop that is lined with glimmering rings of gold. I want to watch Sonic take a series of elevators to a bumper-lined tunnel filled with even more glimmering rings of gold. I want to watch Sonic blast his way into an enormous floating slot machine and get three Doctor Eggmans. I want to watch that red sneaker-wearing, fairly irritable, heroic hedgehog viva Sonic Vegas on the silver screen.

Would I be mad at a shot-for-shot remake of this gameplay video?

Nope. Not even a little bit. Can you even imagine hearing that song pumping through a movie theater's sound system? It'd be almost as beautiful as being a two-tailed fox who can fly around like a helicopter. Almost.
