Barack & Michelle Obama's Wedding Day Was So '90s

When they leave the White House in January (SOB), the Obamas will leave behind them a variety of important legacies. One of the more superficial among them is that they’ve been some of the White House’s most stylish inhabitants (especially Michelle). Photos of Barack and Michelle Obama’s wedding day show that the president and First Lady have always been #stylegoals — even in the early ‘90s, when wedding wear was often, let’s say, “questionable.” (And they look so sweet together that clearly they are #relationshipgoals, too.)

The Obamas married on October 3, 1992, after dating for two years. They met in 1989, when Barack Obama got a job as a summer associate at a law firm in Chicago, and then-Michelle Robinson was assigned to be his advisor. At first, she refused to go out with him, but she eventually relented. Of their first date, Michelle Obama has said, “It was a cool date, actually. We spent the whole day together.” The date included lunch at the Chicago Art Institute, a long walk, and a viewing of Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. “He was showing me all facets of his character,” she recalled in a video from The Telegraph. “…He was hip. Cultural. Sensitive.”

A couple years later, they got engaged. “We were at a restaurant having dinner to celebrate the fact that he had finished the bar," Michelle told ABC News. "And that was supposedly the reason. And then the waiter came over with the dessert and a tray. And there was the ring. And I was completely shocked."

The Obamas married in the autumn of 1992 at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Photos of the couple show Michelle looking amazing, wearing a dress that would have been my ultimate wedding fantasy in the early ‘90s: Off the shoulder, long sleeves, poofy veil. Perfection.

And you know what else is perfection? The happiness in these photos. That last one, especially — with the exhausted bride and groom relaxing on a bench — is everything. Other things I realized while looking at these pictures, in no particular order: (1) I like Michelle’s earrings. (2) These two have not aged. (3) They are too good for us. (4) I love them.

Throughout President Obama’s time in office, the Obamas have continued to show a loving, supportive relationship that has inspired countless sighs of envy, photo retrospectives, and even a movie. A number of times they’ve taken to social media to sweetly comment on anniversaries and birthdays, and thus reassure us that there is something good in this universe.

Can’t we just get them to stay?
