The Classical Music Video That Includes Twerking

How do you know globalization exists? When a Korean dance group makes a music video set to a piece of classical music by a Czech composer using dance moves that originated in the African American community. Put another way, when K-Pop girls twerk to the music of Antonín Leopold Dvořák in what's been deemed the first ever music video for a classical composer.

How did this happen, you ask? Well, it's part of "Classic Comeback," an initiative by B Classic to get kids interested in classical music again. And I guess I can see how making music videos with elements kids can relate to is a solid way to do that. In today's world, people are used to music having a visual element, and for something as unfamiliar to today's young people as classical music, it helps to give them things they'll recognize in order to provide a gateway into the experience.

On the other hand, though, I'm not sure I'm super happy that the recognizable element they went for here is the "sexy women dancing sexy for no particular reason except sexy" trope. The group's moves are great and all, but there is a lot of unnecessary attention paid to boobs and butts. Isn't classical music supposed to elevate our cultural modes of expression or something?

Still, you should check it out, if for no other reason than it's probably the most surreal experience you will have all day. And I guess the music is pretty cool, too.
