'Sherlock' Fans: Prepare to Be Very Happy (Maybe)

by Alicia Lutes

Can somebody go check on Tumblr? I'm worried about them (collectively) after hearing this news: Sherlock may be coming back for a one-off special before season four. I repeat: Sherlock may get a one-off special this year. At least that's what Martin Freeman said in a new interview on the UK television program, Chatty Man. And if anyone were to know anything about it, it's certainly Dr. John Watson, innit? But oh wait, not so fast.

Perfectly embodying the name of the series, Freeman quipped, "[Sherlock co-creator] Mark Gatiss may beat me up, but there is an idea for this one-off special that's such a good idea, and as I was listening to it I thought 'we've just got to do this.'" But don't get too excited, because there's a major, major caveat there, as the actor added, "I don't know when we are going to be able to do it, unfortunately. It's a fantastic, really mouth-watering idea, but I really don't know when we are going to get to do it." Ugh, way to build us up just to knock us down, Freeman. There's no way Sherlock would stand for this sort of nincompoopery.

The news all comes on the heels that there was a sliver of a hope that season four might actually be filmed this year. Just last week Freeman admitted that the intent was to shoot new episodes of Sherlock later on in the year. "I thought the plan was to do it in the autumn but apparently that's fallen away." Just keep stepping on us and killing us slowly, Freeman, why don'tcha? Next time just keep your mouth shut until it's confirmed, alright?
