7 Mother's Day Ideas for Celebrating Your Mom When You Don't Live Near Her

Living far from your family can be rough. Your friends are scheduling weekend brunches with their parents while you're scheduling semi-yearly flights home. They're taking the train out to the 'burbs for Sunday dinners while you're making do with long-distance phone calls. They're serving breakfast in bed on Mother's Day while you're sending a half-hearted flower arrangement from across the country. But don't feel weepy while the rest of the world is celebrating the holiday IRL this weekend! Here are 7 ways to make Mother's Day special, even when your mom is miles away.

Cook something that reminds you of home

Cooking something that she taught you to make, used to make for you growing up, or reminds you of home is a great way to pay homage to your mom on Mother’s Day. Be sure to send Mom a picture of the finished dish and call her to tell her how delicious it was.

Make a photo album

Going through old pictures of you and your mom is a great way to celebrate her. Make two photo albums and send one to your mom so she can remember your special moments together.

Watch an old favorite

Coordinate a Netflix night with mom. Make some popcorn, turn on an old favorite film at the same time, and put each other on speakerphone so it feels like you’re sharing the same couch.

Skype

Seeing each other’s faces this Sunday will feel damn good. Why don’t you do this more often? Make a weekly Skype date the long distance Mother’s Day gift that keeps on giving.

Book a visit

If you can’t make it home for Mother’s Day, put a light at the end of the tunnel by booking your next visit home. It will take some of the sting away from missing Mother’s Day and act as the perfect present.

Throw a get together

You aren’t the only one who has to celebrate Mother’s Day away from home. Plan a brunch for your other friends who have to celebrate the holiday long distance, and go around the table telling sweet stories about your moms.
