'Shawhshank' Meets ... Smash Mouth's "All Star"

by Mallory Schlossberg

"All Star" was probably a song that didn't need to get revived: It had a nice, lighthearted run in 1999. You'll never shine if you don't glow, kids. However, the song gets an excellent treatment in " The Shawshank Redemption Ultramix Volume 1," a mashup of The Shawshank Redemption and "All Star." Sound like the oddest juxtaposition and combination of source materials ever? Yup. But it's downright hilarious, and after you watch it, you'll be filled with warm feelings for the Internet.

Anyway, this whole thing came about because Film Drunk's Vince Mancini had this excellent idea of taking that moment in which Andy Dufrense kicks his legs up on the table after locking the door in the PA room and starts playing music, and giving him a new soundtrack. He thought it'd be pretty funny to put that ubiquitous ear worm from '99 in the scene, instead. Spoiler alert: he was right; it's funny.

And hey — the video is called "The Shawshank Redemption Ultramix Volume 1" — with the operative words there being "Volume 1" which suggests THERE MIGHT BE MORE. Maybe future volumes will feature Beyoncé, or better — other catchy songs that hung up their hats in the late '90s.

Check it out below, and enjoy!
