You'll Never Want to Drink Coke Again

I think we, as soda-drinking Americans, are in denial: we know Coke is full of sugar — tooth-dissolving, penny-shining sugar — yet we drink it anyway. Well, thanks to Buzzfeed, we can see what Coke looks like without water — an image that would make anyone switch to water immediately and never look back. CrazyRussianHacker, a YouTuber famous for performing “cool science experiments” (like cooking bacon in the microwave and other survival hacks), boiled down a 16 oz. bottle of coke in his latest video to show how much sugar is in the drink.

The result: Thick. Brown. Sludge.

Yep, after boiling down the soda in a pot, he was left with something Ewan McGregor's character in Trainspotting would probably go toilet-diving for. And there was a lot of it. (Shudders.)

As far as numbers go — if the thought of your stomach acids tackling that thick tar in a military-troups-vs.-Godzilla-type scenario didn’t scare you enough — About.com suggests there’s around 44 grams of sugar in a 16 oz. bottle of coke (33 in a 12 oz. can). According the Daily Mail, that's almost twice the daily recommended amount of sugar suggested by the World Health Organization (25 grams). It's also the same thing as eating about six Oreos.

Sure, we know a lot of our foods are full of sugar and chemicals, yet we do it anyway regardless. But actually seeing pink slime, or "Franken-meat," or in this case, what 44 ounces of boiled down sugar looks like, is a whole different story.
